VY Canis Majoris
or VY CMa is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major or
located in 4900 light years from Earth. It is the eight biggest star the
astronomers have found yet in Milky Way.
Characteristic of VY Canis Majoris is has
circle shape, and has dark orange color. Its volume is almost a billion
times that of the Sun, though its density is much less. Since 1847, VY
Canis Majoris is known as a red star. With surface temprerature about 3000 K,
including cold temperatures for a star. VY Canis Majoris exhibits periodic
light changes. Its period lasts for about 2,200 days. The age of VY Canis
Majoris is 240 million light years. The Diameter of VY Canis Majoris is 2.921.100.000
km. While the diameter of the our sun is 1.391.000 km. If
the earth is represented by a sphere having a diameter of 1 Centimeter the sun
is equivalent to 109 centimeters in diameter ball. VY Canis Majoris and
equivalent-sized balls approximately 2.3 kilometers. Imagine if the VY Canis
Majoris is bigger than the Sun. So, how small we are in this world? VY Canis
Majoris is arguably a dying star. Like the other big star, VY Canis Majoris
became so big because hydrogen fuel has run out on it and finally become a
black hole. And Imagine if the passenger airplane flying along the surface of
this star at 900 km/h! It would take 1100 years to circle it one time. And if
the light surrounding VY Canis Majoris light will take approximately 8 hours.
